Here’s the Breakdown

Ask ten people in Aurora how long their commute takes and you’ll get answers that don’t seem to belong to the same city. Fifteen minutes. An hour and change. Both are probably true. Aurora covers more than 160 square miles, with no single downtown pulling everyone toward the same few streets. That size is the whole story here. Whether biking beats driving, or the other way around, depends almost entirely on where you live and where you’re headed. And the honest answer might surprise people who assumed a car was the only real option.

Your Job Location Matters More Than Your Address

Aurora workers scatter across four very different job centers, and each one shapes the commute differently.

The Anschutz Medical Campus and the Fitzsimons area, tucked into the northwest part of the city, pull in tens of thousands of healthcare workers and researchers every day. The Denver Tech Center corridor, southwest along I-25 and I-225, is where most of the region’s corporate and finance jobs sit. Denver International Airport and the logistics sprawl around it dominate the north and northeast. Buckley Space Force Base, closer to the center of town, runs its own tight morning and evening rush tied to gate access.

Live in southern Aurora and work in the DTC, and you might get there in under 20 minutes off-peak. Live out in Murphy Creek on the eastern edge, though, and a trip toward central Denver or the DTC can eat 45 to 60 minutes during rush hour. Same city, wildly different reality.

The Traffic Everyone Complains About Follows a Pattern

Representational Image

I-225 is the backbone most Aurora drivers rely on, and its interchange with Parker Road is where things get genuinely dangerous. Drivers coming off Parker have to cross four lanes of highway traffic in a matter of seconds while cars merge in from Hampden Avenue at the same time. Morning volume at the DTC Boulevard on-ramp routinely tops 19,000 vehicles, and it climbs past 41,000 near East Orchard Avenue.

Rush hour here isn’t really two windows anymore. Morning traffic starts building around 6 a.m., peaks between 8 and 9, and doesn’t fully clear until after 9:30. Afternoons start early too, around 2:45 p.m. as school pickup traffic spills onto arterial roads, dragging on past 6:30. Wednesdays are the worst day to drive, since that’s when most hybrid workers show up to the office at once. Friday afternoons bring their own headache: office traffic collides with weekend travelers heading to the mountains, making it one of the most unpredictable windows of the week.

Add in the roughly 100 active construction zones the city is managing on any given workday, and “28 minutes,” the official average one-way drive time, starts to feel more like a suggestion than a promise. Chambers Road and East Iliff Avenue holds the dubious title of Aurora’s most crash-prone intersection, and a few others, like East Colfax and Chambers, or Alameda Parkway and Sable, aren’t far behind.

The city’s been trying to fix a few of the worst offenders too, redesigning several of these interchanges with roundabouts to slow traffic down before it collides. Because Colorado runs on a modified comparative negligence standard, sorting out who’s actually at fault after one of these pile-ups often isn’t as simple as it sounds, either.

What a Car Actually Costs You Here

Owning a commuter vehicle in the Denver-Aurora area isn’t cheap, and the number that usually surprises people is the total: somewhere between $11,828 and $15,300 a year, once you count everything.

Loan payments run $400 to $700 a month depending on whether the car is new or used. Full coverage insurance averages around $241 a month, and Colorado premiums sit above the national average largely because of hail damage claims. Fuel adds roughly $144 a month for a typical 12,000-mile year. Then there’s maintenance, about $70 a month for oil changes, tires, and the wear that comes with winter driving, registration and taxes around $33 (tied partly to a value-based ownership tax that shrinks as the car ages), and parking or tolls that can run $100 a month or more depending on your job site. If you’re driving an EV, Aurora’s growing EV charging network shifts a few of those numbers too, mostly for the better, though you’ll still pay a separate road usage fee at registration.

None of that is exotic. It’s just what it costs to keep a car running in a city built around driving.

Biking Here Isn’t What It Used to Be

Aurora’s citywide Bike Score sits at 60.8, which puts it among the top 20 most bikeable large cities in the country. But that number hides a lot. Central and north Aurora have real bike lanes and connected trails. Out in Murphy Creek and other far-eastern developments, the Bike Score drops to 26 and the transit score is flat zero. If you live out there, biking to work isn’t really on the table yet.

Representational Image

Where the infrastructure does exist, it’s genuinely good. The High Line Canal Trail runs 71 miles through the region and now connects cleanly through central Aurora after a gap closure finished in 2024. The Tollgate Creek Trail links neighborhoods up through DeLaney Farm to that same canal system. Anschutz Medical Campus has built out real end-of-trip facilities, covered and keycard-locked bike parking, showers, lockers, and a direct path to the nearby light rail station, making it one of the easiest places in the city to bike to work.

E-bikes change the math for longer trips. A pedal-assist e-bike stretches what counts as a “reasonable” bike commute from about 3 miles up to 12, without leaving you drenched in sweat before your 9 a.m. meeting. Colorado sweetens the deal too: every resident gets a $225 discount at the register on a qualifying e-bike, once a year, and that can stack with retailer promotions or income-based rebates worth up to $1,600. Combined, some buyers knock $450 to $900 off the sticker price.

So Which One Actually Makes Sense for You

Distance is the first thing to check. Under 5 miles, a regular bike on the trail network works fine. Between 5 and 12 miles, a Class 3 e-bike (the kind that assists up to 28 mph) can genuinely match a car’s rush-hour time. Past 12 miles, you’re probably better off driving, or pairing an e-bike with the R Line light rail, which runs bikes on board and follows the I-225 corridor past several of the worst driving bottlenecks in the city.

Representational Image

The other question is simpler: is there a connected trail near both ends of your trip? If your home and your job both sit within about a mile and a half of something like the High Line Canal or Tollgate Creek, biking stops being a lifestyle choice and starts being just a faster way to get to work. If you’re out past the edge of the trail network, in Murphy Creek or similar developments, a car is still doing most of the heavy lifting, at least until the city fills in more of those gaps over the next several years.

There’s no single right answer here, and anyone telling you otherwise probably hasn’t looked at a map of this city. What’s changed is that biking, especially with an e-bike and a bit of state money behind it, is now a real option for a lot more Aurora commuters than it was even a few years ago. Whether it makes sense for you comes down to two questions: how far are you going, and does a trail actually get you there.

Ask ten people in Aurora how long their commute takes and you’ll get answers that don’t seem to belong to the same city.
